King Alfred and Somerset Day at Avalon Archaeology
Saturday 11 May 2024
Somerset Day is celebrated annually in May. It marks Alfred the Great’s call to arms and the gathering of ‘all the people of Somerset’ to march against the invading Viking army.
Join us as we mark Somerset Day with reenactors from Draca Beorder who will bring the site to life, and take part in children’s activities exploring life in Saxon Somerset. Strike an Alfred coin, follow the Alfred Art Trail, learn to write in the style of King Alfred and dress up like a Saxon for a selfie in the longhall.
Visitors can explore the reconstructed Anglo-Saxon longhall and Roman dining-room. Filled with hand crafted furniture and art, you will immerse yourself in thousands of years of heritage. There is also a reconstructed Viking ship and Iron Age roundhouse under construction.
