One of Somerset’s heritage businesses, Coates English Willow, who have been growing willow on the Somerset Levels since 1819 and still owned and run by the Coate family, has joined Somerset Day as an Official Partner.
Nicola Coate said “The Somerset Levels is the most important wetland area in the U.K. and it is now the only area left where willow is still cultivated for the production of baskets, coffins, furniture, garden items and high quality artists' charcoal. We are are thrilled to be joining Somerset Day as a partner and are looking forward to celebrating our great County alongside all our other partners. As a family-owned business born and bred in Somerset living our heritage every day, it feels natural for Coates to become a Somerset Day partner.
From the Sweet Track to a picnic basket, willow is part of Somerset’s heritage, landscape, social history, and economy and here at Coates we strive to ensure it will continue in this way. Somerset has so much to shout about and share its going to be a struggle to fit it all into one day !”.
Coates English Willow will be working closely with the team at Somerset Day said Founder of Somerset Day, Nigel Muers-Raby, “We’re absolutely delighted to welcome this remarkable family business as official partners. Their roots are deeply planted in Somerset and they share our desire to support Somerset’s communities, organisations and independent businesses. We look forward to working with them on our 2022 campaign to Fly the Flag for Somerset.
