Celebrating Somerset Day through song and music

With Somerset Day fast approaching school children across Somerset have been busy working hard to celebrate Somerset Day through song and music.

Primary School children have come together to perform “We will sing’” by Kate Rusby, specially commissioned for Somerset Day 2021 to celebrate Spring and to look forward to better times.

Jo O’Callaghan, Strategic Manger Somerset County Council Support Services for Education, whose team have worked with Primary Schools to produce “We will sing” said “This is fantastic and it actually made me quiet emotional listening and watching children sing after so long”.

The Lads of the Levels, part of the Somerset County Youth Choir, can be seen giving a great performance of “Fight the Dragons” from Big Fish (in lockdown), whilst the Senior Girls perform of “O Waly, Waly”, a folk song of Scottish origin but which was included in Cecil Sharps Folk Songs from Somerset in 1906.

As a further part of celebrating Somerset Day through Song and Music the Somerset County Youth Orchestra and County Youth Concert Band have put together a video performance of Vaughan Williams Folk Song Suite 3rd movement “folk songs from Somerset”.

The videos of these performances can be seen here Somerset Day YouTube Channel

Somerset celebrates its birthday over the weekend of 8/9th May through to Somerset Day on 11th May so it’s a great time to celebrate as we wave goodbye to lockdown.

Lucy Housley, one of the organisers of Somerset Day says, “It’s wonderful to see our children and young students getting so involved in Somerset Day. Their enthusiasm will be an inspiration to many and a much needed tonic as families and friends start to come together again. We are incredibly grateful to the teams at Support Services for Education and Somerset Music for all their work and for helping involve children and students in celebrating Somerset as a place to live, work, play and learn”.

The organisers of Somerset Day want people throughout the county to Fly the Flag for Somerset on the weekend of 8th/9th May through to Somerset Day on 11th May, so make sure you are ready by downloading a Somerset Day pack from www.somersetday.com.
